Today, we got to experience the Mass Casualty Drill at the University of South Alabama. It was a explosion from a gas pipe in the concession stands. It was to give the EMT's, fire fighters, and police officers training for the semester.
We started off the day by getting ready and preparing for the drill. We used moulage to create our "injuries" to help make it seem more realstic. We also studied our injury to know what was wrong with us and if we were asked any questions we would know the answer to them.
Once we got to the university we set up for the drill. We got into our spots and got ready. They set off a fake noise to act as the explosion and then set off smoke bombs as if there was an actual explosion. The EMT's, Fire FIghters, and Police Officers did not take off running orr scatter every which direction. They took their time and stayed in big groups. They helped the wrost critical people first and then went through injuries to see who would have a better chance of living or who would die quickest.
I got categorized as a red tag then I was switched to a yellow tag because one of the ladies messed it. Once it was my turn to be taken to the yellow tarp. I was put on a backboard and taken to the tarps where I was then treated after that I got into a big bus and taken to the hospital where I got an XR and surgry and the help I needed to be back to my "normal" self.
I really really enjoyed this years drill. It gave me a good idea of what would actually happen in this situation. I truly think all the college students who were involved would be prepared and know exactly what to do in a mass casualty. This was so much better than last year and I am thankful I got to be apart of it again.
