Today, we had the first day of our trauma week. We had an outside concert with a homemade bomb that is made out of chemicals. We went through the whole scenario of what would actually happen if this scenario was true. It started off with everyone being decontaiminated with the fire trucks and then the Hazardous Materials Unit helped along.
Decontimation:
The process of Decontamination basacially involces the physical removal or neutraliazation of containaments from persinnel anf equitment. The entrie process of decontamination should be directed toward confinement of the containmiant within the hot zone and neturalizing it within the DECON corridor to maintsain the saftey and health of response personnel, and the general public. The best method of Decontamination is to avoid the containimation.
Preventing Contanimation:
COntainmation is any form of hazadorus material (soild, liquid, or gas) that will physically remain on people, animals, or ojects. Exposure means that a person has been subjected to a toxic substance or harmful physical agent through any route of entry into the body (E.G., Inhalation, Ingestion, Injection, or by direct contact, skin absorption). A responder who has been "containamated" when wearing PPE has not nessicarly been "exposed."
Surface VS. Permeation Contamination:
Surface Contamination the impurities that bond or settle on metal surfaces and affect the physical and sometimes chemical properties of the metal, as well as the coatings. Permeation COntainminants are absorbed into a material at the molecular level.
Direct VS. Cross Contamination:
Once the contaimanted indivuial person physically contacts the uncontaminated person, the contaminant is transferred and both indivuials are now containmanitaed to the other person, and they are now also contaimited. This process of cross contamination will go on and on, and spread from one person to the next as they touch more people and objects.
Emergency Decontamination:
Emergency Decontamination is the physical process of immeditaley reducing contamination of indivuals in potentially life-threating situations with or without the formal establishment of a decontamination corridor. This is not a controlled situation. THey should establish an area of refuge as soon as possible, estsablish a gross DECON area using some form of water, and provide emergency medical care for the victims within the avaliable resources on hand.
MASS Decontamination:
MASS Decontamination is established when large numbers of people who need to be decontaminated at the scene of a Hazmat Emergency. MASS DECON operations are based upon the following basic principles such as removing clothing is a form of DECON which can remove the majority of the contaminants and once clothing has been removed, flushing a victim with a low pressure, high volume shower of water will remove additional amounts of the containmant.
I enjoyed this for the most but I wish it was more enteracting. It was also kind of all over the place and did not seem very organzied and I wish we would have been told the accident more clearly because it was kinda of hard to comprehend.
