Today, our interventions class had the opportunity to visit an elementary school to help younger students better understand germs, how they spread, and ways to eliminate them. We prepared a fun craft, a PowerPoint presentation, and an interactive activity about sneezing to engage the students. It was a really enjoyable experience, and I always find it rewarding to teach younger children about important concepts they can apply in their everyday lives.
We began by explaining what germs are. After that, we introduced our sneezing activity, where the students sat on the floor and sprayed a water bottle while pretending to sneeze. This demonstrated how far germs can spread when you don't sneeze into your elbow. Next, we had the students put lotion on their hands with glitter, which we used to represent germs. Afterward, we took them to the sink to wash their hands and remove the "germs." We taught them to sing the "Happy Birthday" song while washing their hands to ensure they scrub long enough. Finally, we wrapped up with a craft project where the students created their own germs. Using popsicle sticks, paper, googly eyes, puffballs, and yarn, they made the best little germs to carry with them.
These activities were a great way to help young children understand the importance of germs and how to keep themselves and those around them safe.
