The USNS Comfort is a hospital ship with 1,000 hospital beds that was commissioned in 1986. The Crew consists of around eight officers and fifty-three enlisted personnel and a mariner cadre crew of fifteen members. The ship is layberthed (a berth used for idle) where only a small amount of crew members which are civil service mariners and Navy personnel that maintain the ship in a high state of readiness. COMFORT provides a medical facility when called upon to the United States military, and hospital services to support United States disaster relief and humanitarian operations worldwide.
USNS Comfort is one of the largest trauma facilities in the United States. It sits right beside its sister ship, the Mercy. These twin ships are oil tankers that were turned into hospital boats. They are each the height of a ten story building and around the length of three football fields. Recently the ship was docked in Jamaica as part of a humanitarian misson called "Counting Promise." Jamaica was the third out of eleven stops that the ship will take over the next couple months. COMFORT has more than 100,000 or more patients they will take care of.
I truly think the USNS Comfort is a great necassity. One day it will truly be needed and come into our hands with great help. Even though there is only one ship it could make a huge diffrence. If we have a world disaster and people need critical help, this boat could save many lives and could change the world. It is a very fascinating thing to learn about.
