(April 24-28)

This week we participated in many things during our Culinary Class. We made Salsa, Taco Seasoning, Pepper Nachos, Chicken & Black Bean Lettuce Tacos, and we experienced a tour of our own cafeteria with Mrs. Cheryl.

We prepared Salsa and Taco Seasoning for our Pepper Nachos. Hallie and I were in charge of dicing the tomatoes and assembling the salsa. We followed a recipe where we had to get the exact measurements and different ingredients in a bowl. When we had put everything in the bowl, we mixed it together and decided to split it in half, put half in a blender, and leave the other half chunky. This is what we did to prepare the Salsa.

Daniel was in charge of making the Taco Seasoning. He also followed a recipe to determine exactly what he needed and mixed everything. The seasoning turned out amazing!

After we made the taco meat and got everything together for our Pepper Nachos we assembled them. We used Bell Peppers as a substitution for chips. A healthier choice but also a very good choice. We put our taco meat in the bell peppers and put cheese on top, put them in the oven to let the meat get warmed up, and the cheese a chance to melt on top. After they came out of the oven we were able to top them with what we would put on our nachos, I put sour cream on mine. It was very delicious!

The last thing we made this week was our Chicken & Black Bean Lettuce Tacos. We used the leftover chicken that we had in the freezer from a previous meal. We heated it up in a pan and used the same taco seasoning on our chicken and let it cook. In the pan, we added black beans and onions and let them cook down until the pan started bubbling. We then took lettuce leaves and filled them up with the chicken we made. After this, we added toppings such as sour cream, cheese, and salsa. This was something I would have never tried outside of this class but I ended up loving it and would make it at home.

We had an awesome opportunity where we got to have a tour of our own cafeteria by Mrs. Cheryl. She showed us the equipment they use to store the food and also how to wash the dishes with high-tech machinery. We also got to go in the food storage closets and the walk-in fridge and freezer. I wish I had some of these things in my own house. We also got to see the lunch ladies making food. It was cool to see the food I eat on a daily being made. It was a great experience and I got to learn a little more about the kitchen and the equipment.
